History

Although Reynolds Legal Solutions, LLC is a new law firm with new offices and a new website, I am not new to the legal profession! I have practiced law in Birmingham since 1980 and am as a life-long resident of the city.

My family has a long history with Birmingham. My paternal grandparents owned a dry goods store in an old mining town outside of Birmingham called Pratt City. They lived their entire lives in or around Birmingham. Likewise, my maternal grandparents owned a grocery store in an old community called Fairfield just outside the city limits of Birmingham. Their claim to fame was that Willie Mays worked for them as a kid delivering groceries. Except for a brief time when they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, they lived their entire lives in or around Birmingham. My mother and father were both raised in the Birmingham area, married and settled down in Birmingham. My mother was a housewife and my father was a lawyer and later a District Court Judge and then Probate Judge for Jefferson County prior to his retirement in 1999. My mother suffered a premature death, but my father continues to reside in a community just outside of Birmingham.

When I graduated from law school in 1980, I returned to Birmingham, married and began practicing law. I have continuously resided in Birmingham since. Over the past years, I’ve worked for several law firms, but have always wanted to have my own office. Birmingham is my home and I am excited to now have my own law practice here. In my hometown, I have a connection to friends, family, church, civic organizations, the lawyers with whom I’ve been partners through the years, and lawyers who practice in the Bankruptcy Court and the judges who preside there.

Philosophy

A major advantage of opening my own law firm is that I can do things and practice law the way I want. For instance, the name Reynolds Legal Solutions, LLC was selected because of my commitment for helping clients develop solutions to their legal problems (typically those with financial problems). I want every client to receive the personal service they deserve that is calculated to create and implement a solution that we have jointly developed to address their problems at a fair and reasonable cost. During the 30+ years I’ve practiced law, I have come to know that people want and deserve value for their hard-earned money. However, it is not about being cheap, but rather about getting the job done at a cost that justifies the effort. In my mind services become valuable when you accomplish reasonably set goals and the cost of achieving those goals is reasonable based upon that accomplishment.

Method

I believe a lawyer’s first obligation to his client is to listen. Before being able to offer any assistance, I must listen carefully to the client to determine all relevant facts and also what the client perceives as the problem. Just as important, before a plan can be formulated a lawyer must understand how a client feels about the facts. While legal issues often center on money, that is not always the ultimate goal and it is rarely the only result valued by clients.

(2) Once I understand the underlying facts, what the client wants and why, the next step is to formulate a plan. Though a plan almost always involves the legal system, it also involves people. Because clients know the people connected to their problem best, it is critical for a client to participate in the development of a plan of action. Here, my effort is to help guide or steer the client toward a solution that is both feasible as well as cost effective.

(3) Once the client’s ultimate goal has been determined, it is my job to generally decide how we plan to get there. I break the journey into steps. I set out those steps in detail for the client so a clear understanding is developed as to what must happen, how it will be made to happen and where the plan may get side-tracked and where resistance may be encountered.

(4) It is important to continuously communicate with a client. Clients want to know, and deserve to know, what is happening and what progress is being made with their legal issue. Good communication also helps clients understand the challenges and success of the stages of their plan. It is also critical to their understanding the value they are receiving.

(5) It is important to recognize that few goals are achieved by following a direct path. Obstacles will be encountered and plans will have to be adjusted along the way. Sometimes, the solution will need to be refined or redefined. Again, this process necessarily involves good communication with the client to adjust expectations, to perhaps establish alternate goals and to redefine value.

(6) I do not promote myself as a legal gladiator. I know it is popular for lawyers to profess to be the baddest, strongest and most aggressive advocates. Unfortunately, we operate in an adversarial legal environment and conflict is inevitable. However, I believe there are many ways of accomplishing legal goals and litigation may, or may not be, required. For most parties, litigation is not a desired activity. I have discovered that some lawyers who promote themselves based upon their aggression are not often focused upon providing value to their client but are merely focused on feeding their own ego.
